Easy to Bake Cupcake Ice Cream Cones

I was in the mood for cake and wanted to make something cute and fun for the kids too.  I used half of the batter to make their treat and cooked the rest in a small pan for the adults.  This is a very simple and easy way to bake the ice cream cone cupcakes without: the mess of filling the entire cone with batter, not having the cupcake rise out of the cone, or having the batter run over the cone as it bakes.

Just line your cupcake pan with baking cups, fill the baking cups with batter, and put the cone in the batter.  I push the cone down into the batter and during the baking process I took out the pan and repositioned the cups because they start to tilt.  I used a cake mix from a box and just followed the cupcake recipe baking directions.  Let the cupcakes cool before you remove the wrappers to frost and decorate.

The cones will tip a little during the baking process but this will be covered easily with frosting and decorations!  Baking the ice cream cone cupcakes upside down will leave you with a high mound of “ice cream” above the cone to decorate anyway you choose.  Check out these cute ice cream cone cupcake decorating ideas.  This cupcake recipe would be cute for a birthday party treat, Halloween party, Easter, class party, or anytime!

Thrifty Organizing for the Holidays: Celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

There are so many cute and fun ways to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday!  The school is having a birthday celebration and read-a-thon during class.  I want to make a fun treat at home for the kids so I searched the internet for some creative ideas.

I came across two cute cupcake ideas I could recreate that pay homage to Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.

To make things simple I plan on using white boxed cake mix and adding food coloring to store bought frosting. The mini Green Eggs cupcakes use an M & M or Skittle and the Red Fish is a Swedish Fish.

Update:  we made Green Eggs cookies!  They turned out cute and probably look more like “green eggs” than the cupcakes.

Thrifty Home Organizing: How to Organize Spices in Your Kitchen Cabinets or Drawers

There are a lot of spice organizers to choose from.  I love the look of the wall mounted magnetic tins!  They are simple and streamlined and look beautiful. Boards have easel backs for counter display or they can be mounted on a wall or inside a cabinet. Containers can also be stuck to any metal surface in your kitchen. The downside to the wall mounted magnetic tins are the cost (they can get pricey) and you have to transfer all of your spices into the small containers which means you may end up storing the original spice containers anyway if the entire bottle doesn’t fit.

If you have a drawer available, an in-drawer spice rack is a great way to organize. A drawer organizer stores spices on a set of inclines. One thing I love about this type of organizer is you can easily see all spice labels.  The downside to this type of drawer organizer is that it cannot hold large containers.

The spice organizer I use in my kitchen cabinet is the tiered expandable shelf organizer.  The organizer can expand to fit the length of your shelf and the tiers allow you to see the spices more easily.  I have the spices I don’t use very often in the back because it can be harder to get to and not as easy to see.  My organizer is not fully extended so I can keep large Costco size containers on the side.

These tiered expandable shelf organizers are affordable and readily available.  I have seen them at Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Walmart, and the Container Store.  The one pictured is $13.99 on Amazon.com right now.

Another great use for the tiered expandable shelf organizer is for canned goods. Because of the depth of our shelves we tend to stack the cans one in front of the other hiding the labels. The tiered shelf comes in different sizes and is a great solution for storing canned goods.

Thrifty Organizing Tip: How to Keep Your Car Organized

The car is such a small space and is used often; no wonder it is such a clutter magnet!

Here are a few things I do to help keep my car organized:

Bring it in, take it out

I always try to have my kids take everything they bring into the car back out when we get home.  No leaving papers, food, toys, etc. in the car.

Bag it

We use plastic grocery bags to hold trash in the car.  I hang a bag on the chair armrest so it is easily accessible.  An empty tissue box is a great plastic grocery bag organizer to keep in the car.

Use your downtime to organize

When I have a couple minutes in the car, if I am early to pick-up or drop-off, or waiting for class or practice to end, I use this time to organize in the car.  I can quickly go through the glove box and throw out old paperwork.  Organize and throw out the stuff in the console.  Organize the “coupon bag” and throw out expired restaurant coupons.  Grab a grocery bag and pick up any things left in the back seats.  Or I can quickly organize my purse.

Thrifty Home Organizing: Using a Utensil Tray as a School/Office Supply Drawer Organizer

An inexpensive utensil tray is a great way to organize a desk or kitchen drawer holding pens, pencils, scissors, glue, rulers, etc.  The trays are cheap and can be found at the Dollar Store, Container Store, IKEA, Target, or Wal-Mart.  The one I used was from IKEA.

I use the tray as an organizer in my kitchen drawer for kid’s school supplies.  It is a real simple way to have all of the tools the kids need to complete their homework organized and easily accessible.

Thrifty Home Organizing: Free Bin and Drawer Organizer

My kids’ “sock bins” were a jumbled mess!  I had originally organized them with bags to keep socks separated from gymnastics leotards, scarves, belts, unmatched socks, and tights.  But, the bags were getting scrunched down and were not keeping the items in the bin organized.

I had mentioned in a previous post, Thrifty Home Organizing: How to Organize a Kids Shared Closet, that our kids have an Expedit bookcase from Ikea.  We use this shelf in their room as a dresser and for additional storage.  They each have a “sock bin,” “PJ bin,” “swim bin,” etc.

I wanted the sock bin to be organized and real simple for the kids to find socks quickly.  Most containers you purchase from the store are too shallow and wide for the bins.  I needed organizers that were tall and skinny.

Large Costco size boxes from snacks, cereal, and other food make great free storage containers and drawer dividers.  I just cut them down to the height I need and puzzle them together.  As you can see, I used just two or three boxes in each bin to create four separate sections per bin.

Now, the boxes keep each type of item in the bin separate.  Boxes are fast, easy, and free organizers!

Thrifty Home Organizing: Laundry Sorter

I had seen this laundry sorter on another blog and loved it!  It was so cute and functional, perfect for sorting and organizing dirty laundry.  I wanted to make one!

But, after redoing my kid’s closet I was left with a shelf that would function the same way as the “laundry basket dresser” from the blog.  Also, I had one large empty storage container that fit perfectly on the shelf.  My goal over the next day was to find and empty four more storage containers I had around the house.

The large storage containers are used to sort dark, medium, and light clothing.  The two small storage containers on top are used to hold hangers and hand wash items.

The shelf takes up a lot less space than the four baskets it replaced.  I used to have to sort clothes in the laundry room because I had to spread baskets out on the floor.  This is so compact I can keep it in my bedroom.

It is not as cute as the blue on I could have made but it was a perfect thrifty home organizing project!  The shelf was no longer being used and emptying the other storage containers forced me to get rid of things that we no longer needed!  Look around your house to find new uses for things that are no longer needed.  When you need a storage container try to empty one you already own instead of buying a new one.

What to Do with the Leftover Chocolate from Valentine’s Day

I had bought some Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses for the “unwrap the kiss” game (see previous post http://www.thriftyorganizing.com/?p=117) for my daughter’s class party and had a lot of chocolate leftover.  One of the other classes had a chocolate fondue fountain.  My daughter has a nut allergy and could not have the chocolate they were using so I told her we could make fondue at home. We had made fondue at home before and used milk chocolate so I figured we could use the extra kisses.

During the week I had eaten a lot of the stash so I ran to Target to get more chocolate.  I had a manufacturer’s coupon for $1 off two bags of kisses and I had printed a Target coupon for $1.50 off two bags.

If you are unfamiliar with Target’s coupon policy it states:

“We accept one manufacturer coupon and one Target coupon for the same item unless either coupon prohibits it.”

I was able to “stack” the coupons by using my manufacturer’s coupon along with my Target coupon to give me a total of $2.50 off the kisses.  By this time, Valentines candy had been marked down and I was able to get two bags of Hershey’s Valentine Kisses for $.38 after both coupons.

If you are interested in printing Target coupons you can go to http://coupons.target.com/#?lnk=GlobalPromise|&intc=263580|null.  Be aware that there are some manufacture coupons on this site too.  Remember you can use one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon per item.

If you have a chocolate fountain check out the following article on How to Use Hershey Kisses in a Chocolate Fountain http://www.ehow.com/how_7663862_use-hershey-kisses-chocolate-fountain.html#ixzz1msG44jRq

Here is the chocolate fondue recipe we used:

In a small crockpot add:

1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

2 cups chocolate (chocolate chips, candy bars, kisses (approx. 70 kisses or 11 oz bag), or whatever you have on hand)

1/2 bag of marshmallows (10.5 oz. bag)

1 teaspoon vanilla

Have your crockpot set on medium heat and stir every 20 minutes until smooth and creamy.  As an alternative, you can warm it on the stove top in a large sauce pan while stirring continuously.

Thrifty Home Organizing: How to Organize a Kids Shared Closet

The kid’s closet had not been fully functional for a while.  A few years ago, during a home organizing spree, I installed the wooden shelf that divided the closet into two halves and installed additional rods.   Their clothing was smaller back then and this worked well at the time.  The shelves between were used like a dresser and the bottom shoe cubbies worked well for their tiny shoes.

Fast forward several years and their clothing started to hang down over the rods, we needed more hanging space, and we weren’t using the shelves.  In the meantime, we had bought some new shelves at Ikea (Expedit bookcase) that had replaced the need for the closet shelves and their shoes weren’t fitting into the tiny shoe organizer anymore.  We needed a change!
